National CME on "Insight into Primary Immuno Deficiency Disorders" Concluded in AIIMS-R

Raipur : To address the primary immunodeficiency challenges in health, All India Institute of Medical Sciences organized a National CME and 2nd State Chapter ACCLMP "An Insight into Primary Immunodeficiency Disorders" on 27.04.2024. Experts from prestigious medical institutes called for early diagnosis and quality treatment to control more than 500 forms of primary immunodeficiency causing various diseases and infections.

While inaugurating the CME Executive Director, Lt Gen Ashok Jindal (Retd) said that primary immunodeficiency is posing a challenge to a healthy society. He suggested having a robust data registry to conduct research and make effective interventions. "We need a lot of data to know about the epidemiology of a particular disease. Only then will we have a better health system to control it, he said.

Prof. Eli Mohapatra, HoD, Biochemistry Department, said that primary immunodeficiencies are rare diseases that occur when a person’s immune system is absent or does not function properly. When a defect in the immune system is inherited, it is called a primary immunodeficiency. There are over 500 forms of primary immunodeficiency, ranging widely in severity.

Experts in the CME said that primary immunodeficiency often presents in the form of "common" infections, sometimes leading physicians to treat the infections while missing the underlying cause, allowing the infections to reoccur, and leaving the patient vulnerable to vital organ damage, physical disability, and even death. They suggested having an early diagnosis system to control it.

Dr. Joydeep Samanta, Dr. Simran Syal, AIIMS, Raipur, Dr. Manpreet Dhaliwal, and Dr. Amit Rawat, PGI Chandigarh defined various aspects of immunodeficiencies. They talked about the technological and state-of-the-art diagnostics available for it.

During the CME, Prof. P.K. Patra, Vice-Chancellor Pt. Deendayal Upadhyay Memorial Health Sciences, and AYUSH University, Chhattisgarh was also felicitated by Lt Gen Jindal for his remarkable contribution in clinical biochemistry. A poster presentation, quiz, and painting competition were also organized, and winners were felicitated during the CME.
