NEW DELHI: In a move reflecting administrative continuity within the top echelons of the government, the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) has approved a one-year service extension for Amrit Agrahari, a 2011-batch Indian Revenue Service (Income Tax) officer. Agrahari will continue to serve in his critical role as Director at the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO).
Extension Details
According to an official order released by the Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT) on May 2, 2026, the central deputation tenure of the senior IRS officer has been extended beyond the previously scheduled end date of July 9, 2026. The new mandate extends his stay in the PMO until July 9, 2027, or until further notice, whichever occurs earlier.
A Track Record of Strategic Roles
Agrahari’s professional trajectory over the last few years highlights his involvement in several high-stakes departments. His tenure at the PMO began in late October 2025, where he transitioned after serving as Director in the Department of Economic Affairs (DEA).
His expertise in economic policy and international coordination was notably honed during his time at the G-20 Secretariat, where he began serving in November 2022. During this period, India held the G-20 Presidency, a milestone that required intense diplomatic and economic maneuvering. Following the successful conclusion of major G-20 deliverables, he was appointed as Deputy Secretary in the DEA in March 2024, before being elevated to Director-level responsibilities.
Significance of the Move
The PMO serves as the nerve center of Indian governance, overseeing the implementation of flagship programs and coordinating between various ministries. Agrahari’s extension is seen by observers as a sign of the government’s trust in his administrative capabilities and his deep understanding of the economic landscape.
As the government moves toward the latter half of its current term, retaining experienced officers like Agrahari in the PMO ensures a seamless transition of policy initiatives and maintains the momentum of ongoing economic reforms.
